Local details matter

A move planned for your part of Markham

Markham is not one moving market. Wismer, Greensborough, and Cornell are full of 2000s-era homes with double garages and driveway space. Markham Village and Thornhill are older, with mature trees, narrower driveways, and tighter street parking. Downtown Markham and the Highway 7 corridor are condo towers where the service elevator, not the crew, decides how long the day takes. The same three-bedroom load can take very different hours across those three.

We plan crew size and truck size around which Markham you are actually moving from and to. Send both addresses, the building type, floor and elevator details, and photos of anything heavy or awkward, and we will price the real job rather than a generic hourly guess.

01

Unionville & Downtown Markham

Historic Main Street homes with narrow street parking sit minutes from the Enterprise Boulevard condo towers. One is a stair-and-carry job, the other is an elevator booking — they need different plans and different crew sizes.

02

Cornell

Rear-lane garages and dense townhouse blocks near Markham Stouffville Hospital. Confirm whether the truck can enter the lane or must park on the front street. The distance from truck to door affects the time required.

03

Wismer, Greensborough & Berczy Village

Newer detached and semi-detached homes may offer garage and driveway space for staging. Photos help confirm where the truck can stop and how far each item needs to travel.

04

Markham Village & Thornhill

Older housing stock, mature trees, and tighter driveways. Low branches and narrow entries can rule out a 26 ft truck on some streets.

05

Milliken Mills & the Steeles corridor

South Markham against the Toronto boundary — a mix of townhouses and older detached homes, where Steeles and Kennedy traffic shapes the arrival window more than the load does.

06

Angus Glen, Cathedraltown & Box Grove

Larger homes, more total volume, and more furniture disassembly. Usually a 26 ft truck with three or four movers rather than a two-person crew.

Markham: how the work is handled

3 movers, 26 ft truck

Markham townhouse to a Richmond Hill house

The loading end had two storeys, a turning staircase and a narrow basement exit. Three movers worked together on the beds, wardrobes and piano; suitable basement furniture was disassembled before carrying it up. Furniture and mattresses were wrapped before moving, and colour-coded room labels helped the crew place items in the right rooms at the new home.

Before the truck arrives

Access changes the moving plan

  • Downtown Markham and Highway 7 condos: ask management about service elevator bookings, deposits and loading rules before scheduling the truck. Requirements and available time windows vary by building.
  • Cornell and Box Grove rear-lane townhouses: confirm whether the truck can enter the lane or has to stage on the front street. The answer helps us estimate the carry distance and crew time.
  • Older Thornhill and Markham Village streets: mature trees, narrow driveways, and on-street parking limits sometimes rule out a 26 ft truck. Two runs with a smaller truck can finish faster than one truck that cannot get close.
  • Winter moves: clear snow and ice from the route before the crew arrives. Safe access between the door and truck helps avoid delays.
  • Multi-storey townhouses with turning staircases: beds, wardrobes and pianos may need an additional mover to control the turn. Crew size depends on the item dimensions, weight and access.
  • Finished basements: the stairwell and doorway into a Markham basement are usually the tightest part of the house. Large pieces are disassembled before they come up rather than forced through.

Care in the details

See the work behind the move

Photos from G&T jobs show wrapping, loading and access methods. They are not all confirmed as taken in this city.

01Furniture and mattresses are wrapped in plastic film before they move — it protects the item, and it protects the walls, railings, and door frames it passes on the way out.

02Colour-coded room stickers go on at the loading end, so at the destination every piece goes straight to its room instead of being put down and moved a second time.

03The crew is our own. Your move is not handed to a third-party labour agency, and the owner works the job, so there is always someone accountable on site.

How much do movers cost in Markham?

Markham moves are priced by the hour for truck and crew together, starting at $100 per hour for two movers with a 17 ft or 26 ft truck and $60 per hour for one mover with a pickup truck. Larger homes usually need three or four movers with a 26 ft truck. Every local job has a 2-hour minimum, then bills in 30-minute increments, plus a fuel and travel surcharge based on distance and access.

Are you based in Markham?

Our yard and showroom are at 2 Preston Ave in Gormley, just north of Markham off Highway 404 at Stouffville Road. Markham is one of the areas we work in most often, and the short run down the 404 is why. The showroom is private property and visits are by appointment only.

Which parts of Markham do you cover?

All of it — Unionville, Downtown Markham, Cornell, Wismer, Greensborough, Berczy Village, Markham Village, Thornhill, Milliken Mills, Angus Glen, Cathedraltown, and Box Grove, plus the surrounding York Region communities.

Can you handle a Downtown Markham condo with an elevator booking?

Yes, and it is routine work for us. Tell us the booked elevator window when you request the quote so the crew and truck are scheduled to match it. If the building requires a certificate of insurance, we can provide proof of our commercial, public liability, and cargo insurance.

Why do some Markham townhouse moves need three movers instead of two?

Turning staircases can require an extra person to control large pieces such as bed frames, wardrobes and pianos. We assess dimensions, weight and the route before recommending crew size. A larger crew has a higher hourly rate, so the estimate should consider both the rate and the expected working time.

Do you move pianos and other heavy items in Markham?

Yes. Pianos, safes, marble and stone tops, large appliances, and single items over roughly 200 lb are handled with liftgate trucks, piano skid boards, and specialty dollies. These items must be declared in advance so the right crew and equipment are assigned, and they may carry an extra charge.
